Better conservation

Exposing more of the monument
We have adapted the walkways in the Temple Precinct and West Baths to make them less obtrusive and reveal more of the Roman remains beneath them.

We have also opened up and illuminated much of the Roman drain between the Spring overflow and the eastern end of the complex, showing more of the remarkable Roman engineering that still serves to channel the hot water through the site and from it to the River Avon.

The Great Bath

This is recognized around the world and is what people have really come to see. We have renewed the lighting and cleaned and stabilized the stonework to help to preserve the monument for future generations and improve its appearance for today’s visitors.

By clearing the alcoves we have created space for seating introducing benches, as may well have been there in Roman times. Activities and demonstrations can take place in them at key times. Costumed interpretation now animates the walkways around the bath and gives visitors new photo opportunities.
