Red-nosed Romans proclaim Comic Relief to Bath

January 2009

Bath and North East Somerset’s statues of Roman Emperors on the terrace at the Roman Baths will be sporting red noses from Friday 30 January in the six week run up to Comic Relief on Friday 13 March.

Stephen Clews, Manager of the Roman Baths and Pump Room commented: "Here at Bath & North East Somerset Council we are more than happy to help Comic Relief raise awareness of this year's Red Nose Day campaign by displaying the new noses on the Roman statues at the Roman Baths. With three different noses this year we had a joke about having the Emperors and generals "picking their right noses" in public, but I think it's important to show local people that even the Romans had a sense of humour and I'd urge everyone to get involved with the campaign!"

Comic Relief this year explains: “Red Nose Day 2009 is going back to its roots and is simply asking the people of Bath to ‘Do Something Funny for Money’. The mission is easy, just make sure that everyone is laughing and raising money to change the lives of disadvantaged people across the UK and Africa”.

“However, it wouldn’t be Red Nose Day without a host of recognisable faces showing their support. Forget the glitz of A-List parties, the Roman statues of the famous Baths will be sporting their very own Red Noses, to encourage all visitors to cast aside their inhibitions and get ready for something funny in order to build on the success of RND 07”.

Since Red Nose Day 2007, more than £670,000 has been spent in the West helping 43 local projects including Bath Mind.

The Roman Baths is open to the public daily, 9.30am – 4.30pm, www.romanbaths.co.uk
