Roman Baths voted UK’s best place for a date
April 2009
The Roman Baths, managed by Bath & North East Somerset
Council, have been voted the UK’s most romantic destination in a
new poll.
41% of voters chose the Baths as the place they would most like
to take somebody to on a date in the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) poll.
Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Heritage Services team
has the role of protecting this historic monument for the benefit
of present and future generations, opening it to the public and
generating income to pay for this. Last year, 835,000
people visited the Roman Baths. Together with the Pump Room,
it is a favourite place for wedding receptions and you can even get
married next to the Great Bath, at 8.30am before it opens to the
public.
Cllr Terry Gazzard, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Development
and Major Projects, Tourism, Leisure and Culture (Conservative,
Abbey), said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is very proud
of the Roman Baths, which is one of the top 10 most popular
historic attractions in the UK. Our Heritage Services team works
very to make sure that Baths are an excellent visitor
attraction.”
Patricia Dunlop, Commercial Manager for The Roman Baths and Pump
Room said: “We are delighted that the Roman Baths have been voted
the most romantic venue in Great Britain. It is a magical place.
The Romans and Celts who came here regarded the spring as the
dwelling place of the goddess Sulis-Minerva - goddess of wisdom and
healing - so it has been a special place for 2000 years.
Unsurprisingly, it is a favourite location for proposals and
anniversaries. People even get married here and have their wedding
reception in the Pump Room above. Thank you to all of those
romantics who voted for us in such large numbers.”
Fourteen buildings from across the UK were selected by RIBA for
their emotive power and dating potential. After two months of
voting the top three were: The Roman Baths, 41%; Warwick Castle,
11%, and the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, 9%.
The Roman Baths is open to the public daily 9am - 5pm, with late
night opening until 9pm in July and August. Admission prices
are Adults £11.00, Children £7.20, Concessions £9.50.
Three-year season tickets cost £20 for adults. Entry to the Roman
Baths is free to residents of Bath & North East Somerset
Council with a Discovery Card which can be obtained from the Roman
Baths reception, see http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/ for
