New Interpretation

The Circular Bath
Intermittent film projections of life-sized male bathers moving around beside the bath have been projected onto the east and west walls of this cold plunge pool, from a high level.

We have chosen a moment when soldiers and civilians from all over the Roman Empire would have mingled in the baths here. Bathing was usually segregated, and so we have imagined a male bathing session on a typical day in about 200AD.

The West Baths
As well as making changes to the walkways we have improved the decoration and interpretation of this area.

The Shops
Both shops have been refurbished as part of our ongoing programme of shop improvements. The lower museum shop has new entry arrangements to recognize the revised visitor flow through the museum, all of which will now pass this shop.

The range of shop products is closely linked to the site and is rich in quality images to help visitors to share their experiences.

York Street
We will now explore opportunities to extend the visit into the adjacent void under York Street and if possible introduce new activities and interpretation that will appeal to an ever widening range of visitors.
