Wellbeing Wonders

A Health and Wellbeing journey through time at the Roman Baths.

We started our project in 2015 as a pilot programme during the development phase of our Heritage Fund grant. It runs over 7 consecutive weeks and we follow-up with another session a few months later.  Each session starts at 10am and finishes at 1pm. For continuity and feelings of security the sessions take place in the same room and we have refreshments on arrival.

In the past two years we have worked with Bath Stroke Association, Bath Mind and Bath Carers’ Centre and The Genesis Trust. We are able to link to aspects that make it relevant to each group and to access specialists through Bath College, the third-sector organisation and the wider community. The course is responsive to the needs of the learners and is certified by Bath College but it is not accredited.

We’ve been aware that sometimes the Roman Baths can be very busy and so we have timetabled the sessions to take place in the winter, spring and autumn but avoid the peak summer season. Sessions are flexible and have a diverse range of activities which are as different as group discussion, guided tours, themed object handling sessions, creative makes and guest visits by Bath College students to offer hand massages. Each week we work on a modern aspect of wellbeing but bring in the historical aspect - what the Romans did. The historical content allows for a distance and we have found that learning takes place which may not otherwise happen if the course was simply the modern aspects of wellbeing.
