The quickest and most straightforward route if you are travelling from a distance is likely to be via the M5 and M4 approaching Bath from the north. You can then use the Lansdown Park and Ride. See the full Park and Ride services and Bath Car Park charges.

Disabled Badge Holders: There are parking bays for Blue Badge Holders in a number of locations in the city centre. Find out more on the Bath & North East Somerset Council website.

Bath operates a charging clean air zone (CAZ) in the city centre. Not all vehicles are charged. To check if charges apply to your vehicle, please visit the government website.

Please note that the A36 Warminster Road will be completely closed between Limpley Stoke and Monkton Combe, just south of Bath, from 10:00 AM on Monday, August 12, 2024, until spring 2025. We recommend checking how this closure may affect your travel plans to Bath and adjusting your route accordingly.

Luggage, including large rucksacks and pull along cases are not permitted on site. Luggage storage is not provided on site but is available elsewhere – see Backpacks and luggage below.
Food and drink (other than water in a secure bottle), including alcohol and illegal substances.
Pushchairs - if you are visiting the Roman Baths with young children we would encourage you to use a baby carrier rather than a pushchair. Due to some steep steps and narrow walkways throughout the museum, pushchairs will need to be left in the main reception hall during your visit.
Pets other than trained assistance dogs.
Large items such as sporting equipment or shopping bags with wheels (trolleys).
Mark making materials, paint, adhesives, epoxies or glues.
Drones or other unmanned aerial vehicles.
Flags, banners, or potentially offensive signage or paraphernalia.
Weapons, fireworks, smoke bombs, glass bottles, rocks, or any other item that could put the collection, staff or visitors at risk, to be determined at the security team's discretion.

Arriving at The Roman Baths

Entrance to The Roman Baths is located in Abbey Church Yard, next to Bath Abbey. Please arrive a little before your booked time and join the entrance queue. As you enter the building, you'll be asked to walk through a metal detector before heading into the reception hall. Once inside, visit the reception desk where our team will scan your tickets and your visit to The Roman Baths begins.

We are trialling the new metal detection system as part of our commitment to visitor safety and wellbeing. This precautionary measure reflects our ongoing commitment to making the Roman Baths a safe and welcoming space for all, while also preparing for the implementation of Martyn’s Law, a forthcoming UK legislation designed to enhance public safety. Please be advised that our Life & Death in Aquae Sulis Gallery includes human remains. We have chosen to display the individual featured to tell the story about Bath's archaeology and the insights we can gain about past people from their skeletal remains.

The display of human remains in museums presents an ethical issue, which the Roman Baths Museum adheres to industry guidance, standards and advice on. We will continue to review the inclusion of human remains in our displays and make adaptations following best practice and changes in legislation.

Let us be your guides as you step back in time to discover Roman life. Younger children will love following Hoot the Owl on our activity trails, while those a little older will be fascinated and entertained by our free audioguide designed just for children and read by the wonderful Michael Rosen.

Let them feel the stones beneath their feet as they walk in the shadows of the Romans who once bathed in the Great Bath, while costumed characters immerse you all into Roman life.

Costumed characters

Children and adults will love chatting to our Roman characters and learning about their lives.

Their knowledge about Roman life and ability to stay in character is captivating and sometimes very amusing. Just what will a Roman Centurion think if you high-five his slave?

They are not just making it up either! The characters are based on real people who lived and worked at Aquae Sulis 2000 years ago. Their stories have been reconstructed from evidence found here on site at the Roman Baths.

On any one day you might meet the Roman soldier and armourer, or Flavia and Apulia our Roman lady and slave girl, or Sulinus and Brucetus who are stonemasons, or the priest Gaius Calpernius Receptus and a travelling merchant named Peregrinus.

Guided Tours

Join us on a one-hour tour of the Baths. Delve into the Roman bathing experience, explore the famous Great Bath and suite of Roman bathing rooms in the East Baths, and see the Sacred Spring where naturally hot water has bubbled up from under the ground for thousands of years.

During the tour you will have a chance to see historic photos and illustrations of the Roman Baths and handle replica bathing equipment – such as a strigil, which Roman bathers used to scrape and clean their skin. The tour will also touch on aspects of pre-Roman and post-Roman history.

Guided tours are in English and start from the Great Bath each day at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Tours cost £6 per person in addition to your entrance ticket (free for children under 6). We recommend booking your entrance ticket at least 1 hour before the tour time to enjoy the museum and allow enough time to make your way to the Great Bath. As tour numbers are limited to maximum 16 people, we recommend pre-booking your place in advance.

The tours do start promptly, so please speak with a host on arrival if you are running late.

Please note that some of our guided tours use in ear headsets, which may not be compatible certain hearing aids. If you use a hearing aid and would like to join guided tour please speak to a member of our team on arrival - we'll be happy to assist you.
