Join us to explore one of the world’s best-preserved Roman sites. Most of your visit takes place inside our award-winning museum, where you can journey through centuries of history without worrying about the weather.

Wander through ancient ruins, marvel at an incredible collection of Roman objects, and imagine life in the city of Aquae Sulis, all within the shelter of the museum’s air-conditioned and atmospheric galleries.

Discover the past through imaginative displays and immersive exhibits, and see a treasure trove of artefacts on display - including jewellery, coins, and sacred objects once thrown into the spring as offerings to the goddess Sulis Minerva. You’ll explore Roman changing rooms, hot and cold baths, and the temple remains – all sheltered from the elements. The museum’s layout means you can experience history up close, without the need for an umbrella!

The Great Bath – Outdoors, Yet Sheltered

The heart of the site—the Great Bath—is open to the sky, but the surrounding walkways are fully covered.

On sunny days, the open roof fills the space with natural light, while the shaded walkways offer a welcome escape from the heat. And when the clouds roll in, you’re protected from the elements whilst still soaking up the sights, and cooler weather offers the chance to see steam rising from the thermal waters.

The hot thermal waters drew the Romans to Bath and helped them to keep warm in the changeable British climate. The Sacred Spring, at the heart of the bathing complex, dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, provided a constant supply of hot water which reached 46°C (114.8°F), and kept the baths warm even during the coldest weather.
